Daniel 12:4 "But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased."

Daniel 12:9 "And he said, 'Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.'"

Last week, here and in Sabbath School, we beheld a very interesting comparison:

"The Jews misinterpreted and misapplied the word of God, and they knew not the time of their visitation. the years of the ministry of Christ and His apostles, - the precious last years of grace to the chosen people, - they spent in plotting the destruction of the Lord's messengers. Earthly ambitions absorbed them, and the offer of the spiritual kingdom came to them in vain. So today the kingdom of this world absorbs men's thoughts, and they take no note of the rapidly fulfilling prophecies and the tokens of the swift-coming kingdom of God.

"'But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.' While we are not to know the hour of our Lord's return, we may know when it is near. 'Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober'" (1 Thessalonians 5:4-6).

The warning of the Lord's Messenger is just as apropos now, to us, as it was when she first gave it, "The Jews misinterpreted and misapplied the word of God, and they knew not the time of their visitation." Oh how I want to shout this from the highest mountain so that every ear will hear, "Don't be fooled by false theories, don't be cheated out of what god wants you to receive. You are not the children of darkness; you are the children of light. Christ's second coming does not have to come upon you as a thief in the night; for you are to be watching and waiting constantly."

"The time has come for Daniel to stand in his lot. The time has come for the light given him to go to the world as never before. If those for whom the Lord has done so much will walk in the light, their knowledge of Christ and the prophecies relating to Him will be greatly increased as they near the close of this earth's history." (MS 176, 1899)

"God... has caused that the means of rapid traveling shall have been invented, for the great day of His preparation." (FE 409)

"The message itself sheds light as to the time when this movement is to take place. It is declared to be a part of the “everlasting gospel (Revelation 14:6);” and it announces the opening of the judgment. The message of salvation has been preached in all ages; but this message is a part of the gospel which could be proclaimed only in the last days, for only then would it be true that the hour of judgment had come. The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This is especially true of the book of Daniel. But that part of his prophecy which related to the last days, Daniel was bidden to close up and seal “to the time of the end.” Not till we reach this time could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed, based on the fulfillment of these prophecies. But at the time of the end, says the prophet, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Daniel 12:4).... The apostle Paul warned the church not to look for the coming of Christ in his day. “That day shall not come,” he says, “except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed.”(2 Thessalonians 2:3). Not till after the great apostasy, and the long period of the reign of the “man of sin,” can we look for the advent of our Lord. The “man of sin,” which is also styled “the mystery of iniquity” (2Thessalonians 2:7), “the son of perdition” (2 Thessalonians 2:3), and “that wicked” (2 Thessalonians 2:8), represents the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798. The coming of Christ could not take place before that time. Paul covers with his caution the whole of the Christian dispensation down to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the message of Christ's second coming is to be proclaimed... No such message has ever been given in past ages. Paul, as we have seen, did not preach it; he pointed his brethren into the then far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did not proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three hundred years in the future from his day. But since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near." (GC 355-356)

"The Bible was designed to be a guide to all who wish to become acquainted with the will of their Maker. God gave to men the sure word of prophecy; angels and even Christ Himself came to make known to Daniel and John the things that must shortly come to pass. Those important matters that concern our salvation were not left involved in mystery. They were not revealed in such a way as to perplex and mislead the honest seeker after truth. Said the Lord by the prophet Habakkuk: “Write the vision, and make it plain, ... that he may run that readeth it.” (Habakkuk 2:2). The word of God is plain to all who study it with a prayerful heart. Every truly honest soul will come to the light of truth. “Light is sown for the righteous.” (Psalm 97:11). And no church can advance in holiness unless its members are earnestly seeking for truth as for hid treasure." (GC 521-522)

"Man will be left without excuse. God has given sufficient evidence upon which to base faith if he wish to believe. In the last days the earth will be almost destitute of true faith. Upon the merest pretense, the word of God will be considered unreliable, while human reasoning will be received, though it be in opposition to plain Scripture facts." (3SG 94)

"The first and second messages were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the proclamation of the third; but all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as essential now as ever before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth. By pen and voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of the prophecies that bring us to the third angel's message. There cannot be a third without the first and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in discourses, showing in the line of prophetic history the things that have been and the things that will be.... The book that was sealed was not the book of Revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of Daniel which related to the last days. The Scripture says, “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” (Daniel 12:4). When the book was opened, the proclamation was made, “Time shall be no longer” (see Revelation 10:6). The book of Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made by Christ to John is to come to all the inhabitants of the earth. By the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to stand in the latter days." (2SM 103-104)

"Our ministers are not doing their whole duty. The attention of the people should be called to the momentous event which is so near at hand. The signs of the times should be kept fresh before their minds. The prophetic visions of Daniel and John foretell a period of moral darkness and declension; but at the time of the end, the time in which we are now living, the vision was to speak and not lie. When the signs predicted begin to come to pass, the waiting, watching ones are bidden to look up and lift up their heads and rejoice because their redemption draweth nigh.... When these things are dwelt upon as they should be, scoffers will be developed who walk after their own lusts, saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” (2 Peter 3:4). But “when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them.” (1 Thessalonians 5:3). “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4). Thank God, all will not be rocked to sleep in the cradle of carnal security. There will be faithful ones who will discern the signs of the times. While a large number professing present truth will deny their faith by their works, there will be some who will endure unto the end. (5T 9-10)

"We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand. The days in which we live are solemn and important. The Spirit of God is gradually but surely being withdrawn from the earth. Plagues and judgments are already falling upon the despisers of the grace of God. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest magnitude.... The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.... The condition of things in the world shows that troublous times are right upon us. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the near future. Bold robberies are of frequent occurrence. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are committed on every hand. Men possessed of demons are taking the lives of men, women, and little children. Men have become infatuated with vice, and every species of evil prevails.... The enemy has succeeded in perverting justice and in filling men's hearts with the desire for selfish gain." (9T 11)

"The knowledge of the way of the Lord is increasing, and will continue to increase. Hereby and superstition are clothing the world in the sackcloth garments of rebellion and transgression. Literature and cheap fiction of every order is circulated like the leaves of autumn, and the minds of thousands are so taken up with irreligious, cheap trash that there is no place in the mind for solid reading. The Word of God and all that would elevate man from his degradation is passed by with indifference." (Ms 26, 1897)

"Many, very many, will be terribly surprised when the Lord shall come suddenly as a thief in the night. Let us watch and pray, lest coming suddenly He find us sleeping. My soul is deeply stirred as I consider how much we ought to do for perishing souls. The prediction of Daniel, “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” (Daniel 12:4), is to be fulfilled in our giving of the warning message; many are to be enlightened regarding the sure word of prophecy." (Lt 12, 1907)

Over the last two newsletters we have looked at several quotes from Mrs. White referencing the "time of the end." In these writings we have noticed a few very important statements:

  1. God gave to men the sure word of prophecy
  2. Christ urged upon His disciples the importance of prophetic study
  3. The book that was sealed is... that portion of the prophecy of Daniel relating to the last days
  4. It was the Lion of the tribe of Judah who unsealed the book and gave to John the revelation of what should be in these last days
  5. As the message of Christ's first advent announced the kingdom of His grace, so the message of His second advent announces the kingdom of His glory. And the second message, like the first, is based on the prophecies
  6. Which was sealed until the time of the end, when the first angel's message should be proclaimed to our world
  7. Not till we reach this time could a message concerning the judgment be proclaimed, based on the fulfillment of these prophecies
  8. The truths of this book (Daniel) are addressed to those living in these last days
  9. The wise shall understand
  10. The Jews misinterpreted and misapplied the word of God, and they knew not the time of their visitation

This is a wondrous time we line in, the last days of earth's history. We must be ready for Christ's Second Return. Our lives cannot be over crowed with the things of this world, we must stay focused on that which is eternally important; Christ's Second coming, our preparing for His appearing, and the Judgment that will take place before He appears the second time. These are not three separate events, that are all one.

The warning message we have been given by God ti carry to the world could not have been presented before 1844; the start of the investigative judgment. We are to carry this message to the world so that everybody will have the opportunity to hear the truth and be able to make a decision based on the Word of God and not the traditions of man. And we have this promise from God, "The wise shall understand."
