" . . . when he had opened the fifth seal . . ."

  • This seal covers 1717-1844 AD, the period of the Reformation, when many gave their lives for the truth of God's Word. (KC 102)

" . . . I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God . . ."

  • When an individual brought a sacrifice for their sins to the Sanctuary, the lamb was slain and its blood poured out at the base of the altar of sacrifice. Therefore, John portrays the martyrs who have died for Christ as crying our from under the altar to have their lives avenged. These are not actual people under the altar. Compare it to Abel's blood crying out in Genesis 4:10: "And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground."(KC 101)
