PROBLEM: The problem(s) the church is faced with. "Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds." (KC 50)

"...I will cast her into a bed..."

  • The manner of punishment to be meted out to the false prophetess will be appropriate to her crime. This expression seems to be of Semitic origin, and is used with respect to falling ill. (Exodus 21:18; Matthew 9:2, literally "a paralytic cast upon a bed"). Compare the English expression "to take to one's bed." (Revelation 17:16; Revelation 17:18) (7BC 751)

"...and them that commit adultery with her..." (Revelation 17:1, 2)

"...except they repent..."

  • The door of mercy had not yet fully shut. God never shuts Himself off from sinners; it is they who shut themselves off from Him. (7BC 751)

"...of their deeds."

  • Or "her deeds." From the standpoint of God speaking of His church, the sins of Jezebel and her lovers are essentially her sins, for it is she who as a prophetess, aspires to lead the church. (7BC 751)
