"...skill and understanding..."

  • Doubtless with respect to he vision mentioned in Daniel 8:26 and Daniel 8:27, which "none understood" (Daniel 8:27). Daniel could not understand the relation between the 70 years' captivity foretold by Jeremiah (Jeremiah 29:10) and the 2300 days (years) that were to elapse before the cleansing of the sanctuary. He had fainted away when the angel informed him that the vision was to be for "many days" (Daniel 8:26).
  • The manner in which Gabriel introduces himself on this occasion shows that he has come to complete some unfinished mission. This can be nothing less than to carry our the instruction to make this man "understand the vision," as recorded in Daniel 8:16. He says, "I am no come forth to give thee skill and understanding." As the charge still rested upon him to make Daniel understand, and as he had explained to Daniel in (Daniel 8) all that he cold then bear, and yet he did not understand the vision, he nos comes to resume his work and complete his mission. As soon as Daniel began his fervent supplication, the commandment came forth; for Gabriel received instruction to visit Daniel, and impart to him the requisite information. (US 198)
